College Now/Transfer |
COCC first initiated College Now/Transfer courses with area high schools during the 2005-06 academic year. Through this program, we believe we can better align instruction between high school and college courses while providing high school students opportunities to earn transferable college credits. As a result of our instructors working together in this way, more Central Oregon students will be better prepared to move directly into college level coursework after high school.
COCC is currently articulating the following courses: Math (College Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus I and II), Science (General Biology I, II and III, and Oceanography), Literature (Survey of American Literature I and II), and 200-level Spanish courses.
- College Now/Transfer courses are limited to high school seniors and selected juniors (Oregon state policy).
- COCC will approve the teacher for each articulated course: a Master’s degree in the subject area is required for faculty teaching lower division courses. This standard is used for all regular COCC courses and is specifically required by Oregon Administrative Rule (589-007-0200) for “dual credit” courses taught by high school teachers for community college lower division transfer credit.
- As an ongoing aspect of College Now/Transfer, COCC will initiate the following activities on an annual basis:
- Approval of new instructors.
- Preliminary meetings between high school teachers and COCC instructors.
- Any necessary alignment activities prior to offering the course.
- A site visit by the COCC instructor for evaluation of instruction.
- For each course, COCC will monitor student performance.
- Evaluation and expansion of the program: COCC seeks input from Districts and participants to determine what to change in the process, what courses to add, and what courses to continue.
